When Monaco paid Genoa €25 million for Pietro Pellegri, the 16-year-old striker became the world's most expensive footballer born in 2001. That is not his most impressive record, though, as the young prodigy had shattered some ancient statistics in Italy. For starters, Pellegri is the youngest-ever debutant in Serie A. When he stepped onto the pitch towards the end of the fixture at Torino in December 2016, the forward was 15 years and 280 days old -- breaking the record of Roma legend Amedeo...

Barcelona haven't abandoned La Masia players - Valverde

Ernesto Valverde insisted Barcelona have not moved away from their model of giving homegrown players a chance after the club broke their transfer record for the second time this season with the signing of Philippe Coutinho.

Barca could end up paying Liverpool €160 million for Coutinho, who replaces Ousmane Dembele, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund for an initial €105m in the summer, as the club's record signing.

The Catalan club have often played on the fact they have been able to develop some of the world's best players without having to spend big money in the transfer market, such as Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez and Lionel Messi.

But with fewer players progressing to the first team from the club's La Masia academy in recent years, Valverde defended the decision to invest heavily on Coutinho and Dembele and pointed out that Barca have always signed the world's best players.

"Barcelona's model has always been the same," the coach said in a news conference on Wednesday. "[The club] have always gone to the transfer market to sign the best players in the world. Many of the very best players have played here."

Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Romario, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic represent a handful of the big players that Barca have spent big money on in the past.

However, Valverde did acknowledge the importance of La Masia, as well.

"At the same time, we always try to look at the academy," he added. "We want to bring players up [to the first team] based on their style of play and their development.

"You have to remember, we have been through a generation with special players like Xavi and Iniesta (...) sometimes more players will come through from the academy; sometimes there will be less. But we also need to sign players to keep ourselves at the top."

With the arrival of Coutinho, Barca find themselves needing to reduce a wage bill which is threatening to spiral out of control.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the club are working on "several outgoings" with Javier Mascherano, Arda Turan, Aleix Vidal, Rafinha and Gerard Deulofeu all possible makeweights.

Valverde wouldn't be drawn on any of the individual cases. He did admit, though, that he would like to work with a smaller squad, given he now has 25 players registered to play for the first team.

"I have always preferred to work with smaller squads," he said. "I don't want to be working with 20-odd players because then you have to leave a lot of people out and rotate more. And we have the B team, too, where we can also go for players."

Barca host Celta Vigo in the second leg of their Copa del Rey round-of-16 tie on Thursday at Camp Nou. The two sides drew 1-1 at Balaidos last week, giving the Blaugrana a slight advantage going into the game.

"The tie is slightly tilted in our favour because of the away goal, but the advantage is minimal," Valverde said.

"But Celta always score away from home, they have done in every away game this season. We won't have [the away goal] in our heads.

"It would be a mistake to speculate about whether we are in a good position or not going into the game because that leads to mistakes. We want to win the game."

Alexis Sanchez left on Arsenal bench amid Man City transfer speculation

Alexis Sanchez was only a substitute for Arsenal as Alex Iwobi started in Wednesday night's Carabao Cup semifinal first leg at Chelsea despite facing a fine for his late-night partying.

Iwobi faces a club fine for partying until the early hours of Saturday morning ahead of Sunday's FA Cup third-round loss at Nottingham Forest.

That was the Gunners' first third-round exit in 21 years under manager Arsene Wenger, who left Sanchez on the bench as doubts over the Chile international's future continue.

The former Barcelona forward is out of contract this summer and has been linked with a January switch to Manchester City.

Frenchman Wenger was serving the second game of a three-match touchline ban and was expected to be sitting in the press box, having made six changes to his starting lineup.

Ross Barkley, as expected, was not in the Chelsea squad, following last Friday's move from Everton.

The 24-year-old began training with Chelsea on Saturday, but is not yet deemed match fit following his long-term hamstring injury.

Only Antonio Rudiger and Danny Drinkwater were retained as the Blues made nine changes following last Saturday's goalless draw at Norwich, which means a FA Cup replay next week, as Antonio Conte reverted to his first-choice lineup.

Conte had fielded largely peripheral players in the competition thus far, but now Eden Hazard, N'Golo Kante and Thibaut Courtois were called upon as the Blues chased the season's first significant trophy. Captain Gary Cahill was absent from the squad altogether.

Alexis Sanchez 'will add something' to Man City - Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne says Alexis Sanchez will add something new to Manchester City if he completes his switch in the January transfer window.

Sources have told ESPN FC that City are close to completing a January deal for the Arsenal forward, who is out of contract in the summer.

City stepped up their interest in the Chile international after Gabriel Jesus suffered a knee ligament injury that will rule him out for six weeks, but Sanchez can play anywhere across a front three.

"[He is] a very good player. Obviously we will see what happens in this transfer period. We don't have to take care about that anyway," De Bruyne told reporters.

"If a good player comes to us that is better; if he doesn't come we do it with the team we have. We are on a good period already, the whole season. Everybody is doing a good job. When he comes, he will add something to the team."

Canadian captain Christine Sinclair clarified her response to John Herdman leaving the women’s national soccer team for the men’s squad in a tweet on Tuesday night.

Herdman, who led the Canadian women to back-to-back Olympic bronze medals, took over Canada’s men’s program on Monday as head coach and men’s EXCEL director.

The announcement appeared to surprise even Sinclair, who responded to the move by tweeting “Speechless right now….”

But she followed that with another tweet on Tuesday to clear the air.

“Just to clarify, John did speak to me before the announcement was released,” Sinclair said in the tweet that had a picture attached of her and Herdman about to hug. “Still shocked and saddened the man who changed soccer in Canada and my life won’t be leading canWNT any longer. There is no doubt he will succeed in this next chapter as well.”

The 34-year-old Sinclair has appeared in 262 games for Canada, scoring 169 goals and 53 assists.

Soccer Betting – Asian Handicap Secret

Many bookmakers offer Asian Handicap Markets as an opportunity to the traditional “1X2” having a bet markets. if you take your punting seriously, you must encompass or broaden Asian Handicaps into your punting techniques and discover the usage of it as a possible opportunity to 1X2 betting.

when having a bet on Asian Handicap, there are most effective alternatives – to give handicap or to acquire handicap. I for my part sense that receiving handicap has a more benefit than giving handicap.

in case you are receiving handicap, you are absolutely making a bet on the underdog to win the game or on the same time drawing the sport. Your probability of triumphing is better than giving handicap. while you supply at the handicap, the crew you pick has handiest one choice this is to win the sport. you will lose your guess even supposing the group drew the sport. on this experience, when giving handicap, you must one hundred% sure that the team will win. there may be no other way which will win your bet while you are giving handicap except for the group you are taking win the game. As a season punter, i’d decide on accepting handicap. via accepting handicap, you have got already win the bet earlier than the sport even started and it may stay nil-nil after the entire 90 minutes and you continue to win your bet. there is some approach in identifying the chances in Asian Handicap.

most of the time, the hole odds plays a totally important position in figuring out which crew to guess. Bookmakers ninety nine% is aware of the final results of each recreation after they open the odds and offer it to the public. they may typically inflate the chances for the favorite crew. it is going to be clever, after such a lot of years of making a bet, to just accept handicap whilst there’s a clean sign seem in the starting odds.

In the first encounter the Reds dominated proceedings but were pegged back by Wayne Rooney’s penalty following Dejan Lovren’s rather soft foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

So what would happen tonight?

Well, for Liverpool fans anyway, it was a sense of retribution.

The Reds were awarded a dubious spotkick of their own at exactly the same end of the ground when Adam Lallana appeared to be hauled down by Mason Holgate.

Do you think that Holgate's challenge on Lallana warranted a penalty? 🤔

Messi included a clause in his contract that allows him to leave Barcelona if Catalan independence affects the club, according to El Mundo.

The Argentine signed off on a new deal last November, putting an end to any fears that he would talk to clubs about a move in January.

But the latest news regarding his contract once again opens up the possibility of a Nou Camp exit.

However it’s not quite as simple as Catalan independence being granted.

Messi would only look to leave the club if Barcelona were forced out of La Liga and unable to enter the English, French or German leagues.

At least we know Barcelona won’t be moving to Serie A if they get chucked out of La Liga.

Messi in the MiddleAP:Associated Press

Of course, there is another way to get Messi to your club.

Messi’s latest contract includes a €700million release clause, which is essentially spare change where PSG and Man City are concerned.

The 30-year-old has been in typically fine form this season, scoring 22 times in 29 games for club and country.

But let’s not forget that, at the end of the day, he’s just a poor man’s Harry Kane.
