AC Milan’s last win away to Juventus featured one of Gennaro Gattuso’s greatest moments

Dream Team FC
AC Milan’s last win away to Juventus featured one of Gennaro Gattuso’s greatest moments

Juventus take on Milan in Turin tomorrow night.

The game could have a huge impact on the only competitive title race left in Europe’s top five leagues.

Anything other than a win for the hosts will open the door for Napoli.

Milan haven’t won away to Juventus since the 2010/11 season, but the current crop may take heart from events that day…

Do you see where this is going?AP:Associated Press

First of all, let’s take a look at the line-ups for a nostalgia hit…

Hang on, Armand Traore? The Nottingham Forest left-back on loan at Cardiff? Okay then…

As you’d expect from a midfield that includes Gattuso, Van Bommel, Flamini, Melo and Marchisio, much of the game was more of a battle than a football match.

The referee was happy to let a warzone develop and while Milan dominated possession, much of it occurred in nonthreatening territory.

A classical Italian encounter, both teams displayed supreme tactical awareness and soon became clear the opening goal would likely be the winner…

Game recognise game

Step forward, Rino Gattuso.

Milan’s combative midfield general only scored 18 goals his whole career.

So when a scrappy passage of play ended up with the ball falling to him on the edge of Juventus’ box, few fans would have backed him to beat arguably the greatest keeper to ever play the game.

But that’s exactly what he did.

Robinho lurking in the background

A left-foot strike in the 68th minute burst though Buffon’s hands, ending Gattuso’s three-year goalless spell.

His team-mates could barely contain themselves — Zlatan Ibrahimovic pushed his skipper to the ground before embracing him like a long-lost lover.

Juve brought on Alessandro Del Piero and Vincenzo Iaquinta and but Milan’s formidable centre-back pairing of Thiago Silva and Alessandro Nesta held firm.

Oh yeah, Allegri was managing Milan at the time… nearly forgot to mention that

These days, Gattuso is in Milan’s dugout and though their performances haven’t been particularly inspiring under his leadership, the results have improved dramatically.

Unbeaten in 13 games in domestic competitions, Milan count Inter, Lazio and Roma as recent victims and will hoping to add top dogs Juventus to that list on Sunday night.

Seven years ago, Gattuso inspired Milan to victory as a player.

Can he do the same tomorrow as a manager?

Napoli will certainly hope so…

Brentford move into their new stadium at Lionel Road in 2019… but whizkid Ollie Watkins will surely have been poached by a Premier League giant by then

Football news - transfers, fixtures, scores, pictures | The Sun
Brentford move into their new stadium at Lionel Road in 2019… but whizkid Ollie Watkins will surely have been poached by a Premier League giant by then

THERE is a possibility that by the time Brentford move into their new ground, Ollie Watkins will not be there.

The Bees are planning to move into their new Lionel Road stadium in December 2019.

Ollie Watkins may not be at Brentford to see the completion of their new homeOllie Watkins may not be at Brentford to see the completion of their new homeJamie McPhilimey - The Sun

But whizkid Watkins is progressing so quickly that he could well be the next cab off the rank at a club famed for polishing rough diamonds and selling them on for profit.

New England man James Tarkowski is a prime example of that, as is his old Burnley team-mate Andre Gray.

Watkins only joined Brentford from Exeter in the summer but has impressed with 11 goals – form which has not going unnoticed by Premier League scouts.

Yet the versatile forward, 22, is of the “believe it when I see it” mindset when it comes to transfer talk and is fully focused on taking Brentford into an exciting new era.

Ollie Watkins is on the radar of a host of Premier League clubsOllie Watkins is on the radar of a host of Premier League clubsJamie McPhilimey - The Sun

Watkins told SunSport: “When I see stuff like that I question it and don’t really believe it. I know I’ve scored a few goals but, really?

“It is surprising but I just want to keep improving and play as many games as possible.

BEESY MONEY Burnley defender James Tarkowski’s England debut hands Brentford cash windfall

“This is the best place for me to progress. I can’t wait for the new ground.

“Brentford is an up-and-coming place which is going to be huge in the next five years. Hopefully we’ll be in the Premier League in not too long.”

Ollie Watkins has seriously impressed for Brentford this seasonOllie Watkins has seriously impressed for Brentford this seasonGetty

Watkins has surprised even himself with how well he has taken to the Championship.

Not the most naturally confident of characters, he admits he has to familiarise himself with new surroundings – be they a different club, a new league or a newspaper interview – before feeling comfortable.

Yet that process has been speedier than expected in the second tier – which has led many to believe the Devon lad could make the leap to the top flight one day.

Watkins said: “I remember when I came on against Nottingham Forest at home and I thought, ‘Cor, you get a lot more time than in League Two’.

“I get fouled a lot in this league but it’s nothing compared to then.

“I remember playing Mansfield at home and I scored. One of their players came on, he was a little Scouse player, and he just followed me everywhere, pinching me and kicking me!

“Bristol City was the first game I started for Brentford. I scored and I felt I played well. Afterwards, I was quite surprised with how I coped with it.

“Hopefully with age I’ll get confidence. When I’m confident I feel like I can do anything.

“But when there is a little bit of doubt, you can see it in my performances.”

Watkins may not yet have the self-assurance of a senior pro but he has certainly grown up a lot this season.

In tears after losing the League Two play-off final with Exeter to Blackpool in May, the prospect of leaving his boyhood town where he lived with his mum Delsie for the bright lights of London would have been daunting.

But he has adapted well to living on his own in his two-bedroom flat in West London, with his brothers Jordan and Dale just down the road in Chiswick when he needs them.

Ollie Watkins is building a bright future for himself at BrentfordOllie Watkins is building a bright future for himself at BrentfordJamie McPhilimey - The Sun

While Bees’ resident psychologist Michael Caulfield, who worked previously with Sam Clucas who also played up the divisions, has been on hand to help him cope mentally.

Watkins added: “I look back and while winning the play-offs would have topped off the best year for me, I feel everything happens for a reason and that was made to happen.

“I’ve learnt from that, that you have to give all you can and leave it on the pitch, because I feel that day I could have worked a bit harder.

“I let the emotion and the environment get to me a little bit. You have to put that aside.

“It sounds silly to say but it was maybe a blessing it happened because hopefully I’ll get to Wembley again and win that time and then I can remember how I felt when I lost.”

One thing Watkins most certainly is a model professional, idolising Cristiano Ronaldo not only for his talent but for the way he turned himself into the ultimate footballing specimen.

Watkins often has the club chef cook him high-carb food the night before a game, is off to bed regularly no later than 10.30pm, and has invested in NormaTec muscle recovery kit.

It is all to give himself the best chance of being the best he can possibly be – advice constantly reiterated to him by his agent, the ex-Arsenal midfielder Paolo Vernazza, who by his own admission did not make the most of his own talents during his playing career.

Asked if he is baffled by players who do not do everything they can to fulfil their potential, Watkins replied: “It is strange to hear.

“I was always told about David Noble. Apparently when he was younger he didn’t fulfill his potential maybe because of living in London and getting caught up.

“But I thought he was unbelievable and that was at the end of his career so I’d love to see what he was like in his prime!”

Brentford fans will be praying they see Watkins in his prime at their new stadium.

Real Madrid want £88m for Gareth Bale this summer as Zinedine Zidane looks to cash-in

REAL MADRID will reportedly sell Gareth Bale this summer – but only for at least £88m.

The Welshman’s future at the Bernabeu has been speculated on for months.

Despite being under contract until 2022, the 28-year-old has failed to hit top gear with the La Liga giants.

And Spanish news outlet AS claim that president Florentino Perez will allow him to depart at the end of the season.

The report claims that the chief’s dream was to see Bale transform into the long-term successor to Cristiano Ronaldo’s throne upon his arrival in 2013.

But despite numerous successes on the pitch, including winning the Champions League three times, injuries have curtailed his progress.

Bale has played 29 times for the Galacticos this campaign and scored 12, but he has been sidelined for long spells and was only named as sub for the crunch Euro clash with PSG.

And now it looks like they are ready to cash-in and bring in a younger replacement.

‘I HAVE RESPECT’ Spanish star hints that he will snub move to Real Madrid

Manchester United are leading the chase for the former Tottenham man.

Jose Mourinho would love to add him to his ranks at Old Trafford and they are likely to be the first to make a move.

(function(){ var voice = document.createElement('script');voice.type = 'text/javascript'; voice.src = 'https://inconversation.net/widgets.js';var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(voice, s); })();

Way from the Spanish capital, Bale did have a reason to smile last Thursday as he became Wales’ all-time top goalscorer after his hat-trick against China.

That helped fire his nation into the China Cup Final, but they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay yesterday in the Far East.

He is now heading back to Madrid to prepare for an away trip to Las Palmas in the top-flight before he and his team-mates head to Juventus for the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final next Tuesday.

The Bundesliga club says the eight-time Olympic champion, whose last race before retirement was at the 2017 world championships, will "participate in an open training session" with coach Peter Stoeger’s side.

Bolt posted a picture of himself in a Dortmund shirt on Twitter, saying, "BVB, get ready for Friday."

Hilarious moment footie fan leaps out of wheelchair in ‘miracle recovery’ to celebrate Plymouth beating rivals Bristol Rovers

THIS is the hilarious moment a football fan leaps out of a wheelchair and throws his arms up in celebration after his team scored.

In the 45-second clip – which has gone viral on social media – the grey-haired man can be seen wheeling himself alongside the pitch.

The ‘wheelchair-bound’ man leaps out of the chair to celebrate a Plymouth goal to the roar of the crowdSWNS

He then jumps out of the chair, before raising his hands to the delight of the roaring crowd around him.

The unknown man then walks to the front row of the stand packed with supporters before joining in with the chants.

The astonishing clip was taken during Plymouth’s 3-2 win over rivals Bristol Rovers at Home Park on Saturday afternoon in League One.

The chair is thought to belong to 14-year-old fan Oscar Knight, who replied to a post of the video on Facebook.

He said: “It’s my chair, I am a disabled 14 year old and leave my chair to one side during the game.

“This guy borrowed it…. It’s called having a laugh that’s all.”

The video brought back memories of hit TV series Little Britain, where seemingly wheelchair-bound Andy leaps out at moments when his carer is not looking.

Ligue 1: Depay’s late winner seals victory for Lyon over Marseille

Ligue 1: Depay’s late winner seals victory for Lyon over Marseille
Ligue 1: Depay’s late winner seals victory for Lyon over Marseille

PARIS — Memphis Depay scored in the last minute of a frantic match to give Lyon a 3-2 win at third-placed Marseille that keeps alive its chances of Champions League soccer next season.

In the fight for a Champions League playoff spot, fourth-placed Lyon closed the gap on Marseille to two points with eight games left. Monaco is seven points ahead of Marseille in second spot.

The match at Stade Velodrome ended with players pushing and shoving after the final whistle. Lyon defender Marcelo then mockingly brandished a Lyon jersey in front of Marseille’s players as they were walking off. It sparked a further melee which took more than a minute before security officials brought it under control. Several players from both sides tried to get at each other, rather than walking away when they had the chance.

It was the latest volatile incident in the French league.

On Thursday, several police officers were injured after clashes with Lyon fans before a Europa League game against CSKA Moscow.

This followed on from a mass pitch invasion by angry fans of struggling Lille on March 10, when about 200 fans charged onto the pitch to confront players after a home draw with Montpellier.

The acrimony continued Sunday.

As the players walked back through the tunnel to the dressing rooms, Marseille centre back Adil Rami had to be held back as he launched himself at Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda also had to be pushed away moments later as he sought to back Rami up.

"When I see that it just makes me sad," said Lyon defender Jeremy Morel, who formerly played for Marseille. "This isn’t even about football. I think we’ve really had enough of this, we don’t need it."

Marseille winger Florian Thauvin saw it differently.

"Some Lyon players took the liberty of mocking us. It’s not professional on their part," Thauvin said. "They lacked respect. (Marcelo) is a professional player, he should be leading by example. They shouldn’t behave like that."

Greece striker Kostas Mitroglou’s looping header in the 84th minute appeared to have earned Marseille a point, after Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar put Lyon ahead 2-1 shortly after the break with a sweetly struck shot from winger Betrand Traore’s pass.

Mitroglou then almost went clean through from the halfway line in the 89th, only to be incorrectly called back for offside. It proved a key moment as Depay scored the winner one minute later.

Lopes took the free kick after the offside decision, striker Mariano Diaz headed the ball on just outside the edge of the penalty area and Depay read it well to nod it over the advancing Mandanda from just inside the area.

Rami’s own-goal late in the first half cancelled out centre back partner Jorge Rolando’s opener in the 31st.

"We defended really badly," Mandanda said. "We just didn’t match them in the challenges."

PSG COASTING

Dani Alves took Paris Saint-Germain a step closer to the French title, scoring his first league goal of the season with a late header as PSG won 2-1 at Nice.

The 34-year-old Brazil defender met midfielder Adrien Rabiot’s astute curling pass with a powerful header into the bottom right corner in the 82nd minute.

PSG is 17 points clear of defending champion Monaco and almost certain to win its fifth title in six seasons. PSG has seven games left and Monaco has eight.

Nice took the lead in the 17th minute. Mario Balotelli expertly chested down a high ball to the feet of strike partner Alassane Plea near the halfway line, and Plea’s pass sent Allan Saint-Maximin scampering though to finish coolly.

Four minutes later, Angel Di Maria took advantage of slack defending to equalize. It was his ninth goal in 25 league games and he needs one more to match his career-best tally.

The match started at 1 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) to capture a prime-time television audience in Asia. This follows on from the opening of a French league football office in Beijing last year.

"The Spanish and the English did this before. We train in the mornings, so it shouldn’t be a problem," said Nice coach Lucien Favre, referring to the early kickoff. "I hope it was a good advert (for Ligue 1). It was a good game."

Nice is in eighth place, three points above Saint-Etienne in ninth.

——

UNBEATEN RUN

Midtable Saint-Etienne beat Guingamp 2-0 at home to make it eight games unbeaten in the league.

Serbia centre back Neven Subotic scored in the 29th minute from Slovenia striker Robert Beric’s cross.

Winger Remy Cabella went past three players before scoring in the 79th.

——

NANTES DRAWS

Nantes remained in sixth place after drawing 1-1 at last-place Metz.

Nolan Roux’s right knee put Metz ahead in the 12th minute, as he slid in to meet a corner for his 12th league goal of the season.

Midfielder Valentin Rongier equalized midway through the first half.

Claudio Ranieri’s Nantes side is one point behind fifth-place Rennes, while Metz is nine points away from safety.

Man City jet to Dubai knowing victory in next two games will seal the Premier League title

MANCHESTER CITY have flown out to Dubai knowing two more wins will see them crowned Premier League champions.

Monday’s comfortable 2-0 win at Stoke saw Pep Guiardiola’s side move 16 points clear at the top of the table.

It means if they can take maximum points from their next two matches then that will see them be crowned champions on the first weekend in April.

And it sets up the prospect of City taking that decisive step in the best possible way – with a win over local rivals Manchester United.

City’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Wigan last month now leaves them without a game until March 31 when they make the short trip to Everton.

If Guardiola’s men can see off Sam Allardyce’s side at Goodison Park, that will leave them knowing a win over United on April 7 will seal their coronation.

It is all set up to provide the perfect title celebration – and an indication of how relaxed the players are was evident in the aftermath of Monday’s win at Stoke.

Guardiola and his squad hopped on the coach from the Bet365 Stadium to make the short trip back up the M6 as they headed straight for Manchester Airport.

And influential midfielder Kevin De Brune gave an indication the players know the task is almost done with a tweet mocking those who say foreign players don’t like English conditions.

He posted a picture of David Silva celebrating one of his two goals and wrote: “On a cold rainy night in Stoke” finishing the message with a tick for job done.

City want to take advantage of a rare weekend off before the international break by enjoying a few days of gentle warm weather training.

As forecasts project yet more wintry conditions and even snow this weekend, City will be able to wind down with some sun on their backs in the Emirates.
